PAMPA
The artificial membrane method permeability method known as PAMPA was first
described by Manfred Kansy of Hoffman-La Roche in 1998. While PAMPA remains
relatively novel, the concept behind the method is centuries old.
The earliest forays into the method began with studies of soap bubbles and oil
layers on water. In 1672 Robert Hooke and later Isaac Newton observed black
spots patched onto the surface of soap bubbles. Benjamin Franklin’s experiment
at Clapham pond one hundred years later would lead to theory and then
calculation of the thickness of oil layers. Dozens of scientists have followed
in these footsteps eventually bringing us the currently recognized PAMPA method.
The 21st century has brought us Genomics and Combinatorial Chemistry. With
thousands of new pharmaceutical compounds being produced every year, PAMPA is
gaining share as an invaluable tool in identifying suitably bioavailable
compounds for new drug formulations.
It is the purpose of this site to provide a resource and community for PAMPA
researchers so that PAMPA can fulfill the potential envisioned for over 300
years.
